Payroll assistants assist in the overall activities related to the management of employee compensation and payrolls. These assistants apart from undertaking various payroll tasks are also actively involved in fulfilling the following roles and responsibilities – managing compensation packages, collecting and verifying timekeeping data of all employees, calculating pays for worked hours and incorporating leaves and overtimes, managing tax and deductions, calculating bonus and commissions, making direct deposits into bank if needed, updating both paper and electronic payroll records, assisting in calculation of unemployment and severance payment, investigating and dealing with payroll discrepancies if any, and preparing and submitting reports.
Payroll assistants should demonstrate certain skill sets such as – proficiency in general accounting basics, experience in data collection, recording and reporting; solid knowledge of company policies, regulations and legislation pertaining to payrolls and working knowledge of relevant software like Payforce.
