A Piano Accompanist works under the direction of a vocal music teacher and accompanies school choirs during rehearsals and concerts. Examples of duties are listed on the Piano Accompanist Resume as – assisting the director in leading section rehearsals and concerts; coaching individuals and small ensembles; performing piano accompaniment for practice, rehearsals and performance of school choirs; leading section rehearsals by playing parts, correcting mistakes and providing the right notes and rhythms, coaching solos and ensembles by arranging or transposing music, teaching notes, rhythm, teaching good vocal techniques; providing suggestions regarding the interpretation of music and encouraging students; and providing assistance to substitute teachers.
The nature of the job demands the following skills and abilities – advanced piano skills, advanced knowledge of music theory; knowledge of technical aspects of the field of specialty; a good understanding of assisting students in learning vocal music interpretation, and coaching skills. Graduation from a high school supplemented with college-level training in piano and music theory is preferred.
